Stephen Russell Freeman passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Steve graduated from Lee High School in 1979 and worked hard to earn a Civil Engineering degree from Alabama A&M University in 1996. He then went on to work at the Huntsville International Airport as a Civil Engineer, working in a field he was very passionate about. A man of many talents, he was a multi-time autocross champion that blended precision and passion into his love for the sport.
Steve dedicated much of his life to helping others, spending extensive time in prison ministries where he offered hope and encouragement to those in need. His openness about his 20-year battle with cancer inspired countless individuals, demonstrating his unshakable faith and determination.
Steve faced challenges with unwavering grace and always chose to look for God’s plan in every situation. His unshakeable faith was rooted in his belief that everything in his life happened for a purpose and he found strength and peace in that certainty. His strength, resilience, and kindness for others will never be forgotten.
Known for his quick wit, perfectly timed and sometimes inappropriate jokes, Steve brought joy and laughter wherever he went. Above all, being a father and grandfather was the greatest joy of his life. There were no boundaries to his love and service to those he cherished. Steve leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and living life to the fullest extent. He is preceded in death by his adored mother Floris Adams Freeman and his sister, Roxane Robertson. He is survived by his loving father, Russell Freeman; his adoring son, Chase Freeman; and his devoted daughter, Adriana (Dustin) Hoover. He was a proud and beloved grandfather to his treasured grandchildren, Stephen Hoover and Jude Hoover.
He is also survived by his siblings, Teresa Rose Walker and Leila Freeman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends who were like family, and his beloved dog, Otto, who was his best companion.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at First Baptist Church in Madison off Sullivan Street with a visitation from 11 AM - 1 PM. Funeral will begin at 1 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Russell Hill Cancer Foundation in Steve’s honor.
