Richard Lynn Whitmore, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grand, passed into eternity November 14, 2024, in Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 87. Born on May 12, 1937, in Poole, Kentucky. Richard lived a life characterized by steadfast faith, generosity, and deep love for his family.
Richard was married to Cathryn O'Nan Whitmore for 65 years, a union marked by unwavering devotion and support, especially as they faced challenges together, including Cathryn's courageous battle with illness. He dedicated himself to raising four wonderful sons: Curt Whitmore, Cliff (Treva) Whitmore, Rick (Lisa B.) Whitmore, and Randy (Lisa S.) Whitmore. Richard took immense pride in his family and was an active participant in their lives.
Beyond his family commitments, Richard was a proud alumnus of Barrett Manual Training High School and Evansville College. He honorably served in the Air Force, Reserves and Civil Service for 34 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in December 1987. His service journey included five years stationed in Germany, demonstrating his commitment to duty and exemplifying qualities of a composed, confident leader.
Richard’s passions extended far beyond his professional endeavors. He was a proud gardener, whose green thumb brought bounty to be shared with those around him. He also had an adventurous spirit, having enjoyed 72 cruises across the globe with Cathryn. Richard had a keen interest in genealogy, always eager to learn more about his heritage. In addition to his hobbies, Richard was a dedicated servant within the Methodist Church, taking on several leadership roles, including serving as the Ministry Board Chair. He selflessly served his community, offering assistance with taxes as an AARP volunteer, showcasing his generous nature. As a cautious investor and saver, Richard balanced his philanthropic heart with prudent stewardship, embodying a role model of faith and integrity.
His proudest accomplishments include not only his military service and community engagement but also his loved ones. Richard leaves behind a legacy of faith and love through his grandchildren: Rachel (Ben) Emerson, Joshua Taylor, Claire (Charlie) Whitmore, Cathryn Anne (Mark) Joly, Ryan Whitmore, Shelby (James) Griessel, Sarah (Brant) Barker, David (Melanie) Whitmore, Hannah Whitmore, Chandler (Alec) Reeves, Katlyn (Adam) Swayze, Haley (Seth) Almond, and Connor Whitmore. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Atly Emerson, Jack Emerson, Asher Emerson, Josiah Emerson, Kaiden Griessel, Aiden Whitmore, Isla Griessel, Elliott Almond, Parker Whitmore, Willa Griessel, Hudson Whitmore, Emory Reeves, Waylon Almond, Maddie Brooks Whitmore, Polly Joly, Leia Barker, Parker Claire Almond, Easton Reeves, and the promise of another great grandchild on the way.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Lodice and Joe I. Whitmore, Sr., and his brother, Joe I. Whitmore, Jr. He will be remembered not just for the roles he fulfilled in life but for the lives he touched and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
Visitation will be held on November 22, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory in Madison, Alabama. Additional visitation will continue on November 23, 2024, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Asbury Church, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM, concluding at 2:00 PM. Interment with military honors will immediately follow the service at Huntsville Memory Gardens, 6810 University Dr Hwy 72 W, Huntsville, AL 35806.
Richard Lynn Whitmore's life was a testament to faith, family, and dedication; he will be deeply missed.
