George Frank Gorsuch of Huntsville, Alabama, died peacefully on January 5, 2025. He was the husband of Paula (Burrell) Gorsuch for 65 years.
The son of the late Harry and Felicia Gorsuch, George was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 12, 1936. His family transferred to Kentucky for his father’s Army station. His parents divorced when he was in grammar school, and George moved with his mother to Connecticut, where they lived George’s older sister. Just before high school, he went to live with his aunt and uncle in Hueytown, AL. He graduated from Bessemer High School. He served in the U.S. Army Alabama National Guard in the 1960s, working in a Signal battalion.
George had natural talent in drafting, so after graduation, he took a job at Alabama Power Company. At Alabama Power, he met Paula Burrell in 1959. Later that year, they married on his birthday. After several years in the Birmingham area, George and Paula moved to Huntsville where he worked for Brown Engineering. Several years later, George went to work for IBM Federal Systems Division. He worked his way up through IBM and retired as program manager after a career of 28 years. His career took them from Huntsville to the east coast of Florida, and to the Washington D.C. metro area. His proudest work achievements were centered around the space program.
George retired at age 59 which left him many years to enjoy retirement. They wanted to return home to Huntsville for their retirement, which they did in 1993. Thus began many travels and fun times with his beloved wife. He was active in many service organizations such as United Way, Alabama Food Bank, and UMCOR. In addition, George was very active with all of the churches they were members of. He was a friendly, giving, and joyful person. He never met a stranger and had life-long friends whom he kept in touch with throughout his life.
George was preceded in death by his parents and his two siblings, Johnny Gorsuch and Agnes (Sis) Brush.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Paula Gorsuch (Burrell) and two daughters, Debbie Jones (Husband Wesley) of Gurley, AL and Dana Sheil (Husband Tom) of Madison, AL; a granddaughter, Olivia McCoy (Sheil) (Husband Logan); and a grandson, George Sheil (wife Janie).
Celebration of Life will be at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church at 1pm, January 25th, 2025, with a reception to follow. Address 1418 Old Railroad Bed Rd., Madison, AL 35757. Donations are requested in lieu of flowers to the Alabama Food Bank.
