Eugene “Bill” Williamson McCaul, Jr., passed away peacefully on the evening of April 9, 2025, at his home in Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 77.
Bill was born to Eugene, Sr., and Mary McCaul on February 19, 1948, in Richmond, Virginia. After graduating high school at Benedictine College Prep, he obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1970 before entering the Air Force for two years. Afterwards, he earned a degree in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and had a brief career in the field before he found his life’s passion in Meteorology. He obtained a PhD in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma before moving to Huntsville full-time. He was an accomplished research scientist over a 33-year career with the Universities Space Research Association, with over 50 published papers to his name, before he retired in 2023.
In his spare time, Bill was an avid storm chaser and nature photographer, and he chronicled his activities on his website, stormshooter.com, and during exhibits at the annual Rocket City Weather Fest. Those who knew Bill could never forget his passion for weather and his detailed memory of significant weather events. For any of his photos, Bill could tell you where he took it, what date he took it on, and the story behind it at the drop of a hat. He also loved to catch dragonflies and watch Alabama Crimson Tide football with his son.
Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Mia, his son, Andrew, and his sister, Betsy. His family will arrange a private celebration of life.
