David Allan Schaefer of Huntsville, Alabama passed away Monday, March 20, 2023. He was born in
Evansville, Indiana on October 19, 1940. He is survived by his wife, Judy Johnson Schaefer, daughter,
Christi Neeley, son David Schaefer II (Ava), five grandchildren, Colter, Madison, Kyle, and Molly Neeley,
and Jaron Rose. He also has two great-grandsons, William and Wesley Hooper.
Dave received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Evansville
and post-graduate studies in Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. As a young
engineer fresh out of college, Dave dedicated his entire 48-year career to NASA’s space programs. He
worked in many areas of the space programs, including Saturn V, Materials Science Research Facility in
the Microgravity Science and Applications Office; Project Manager of the development of the Crystal
Growth Furnace, which is still flying in the International Space Station. He retired as Chief Safety Officer
on the Shuttle Program.
Dave won many commendations and awards during his NASA career which include Marshall Space Flight
Center Director Commendations; NASA Headquarters recognitions; NASA Associate Administrator
Certificate of Appreciation; NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award; and he twice received the NASA Exceptional
Achievement Medal, in addition to the NASA Exceptional Service Medal.
While Dave missed the challenges of NASA, he stayed busy during his retirement serving as president of
his investment club, and pursuing other personal interests.
Dave and Judy were married for over 60 years, were very supportive of each other’s education and
career goals, and they loved watching Alabama football games together. Judy was a loving caregiver for
him through his last hours.
A visitation for Dave will be held at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home, 16 Hughes Road, Madison, Alabama 35758 on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, from 4:00 – 5:00 pm followed by a celebration of his life. The family welcomes friends to share fond memories or stories, and help us pay tribute to our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
