Myra Shire Groce was a caring teacher, a loving mother, an adoring wife, a delightful grandmother, and a beautiful singer. She passed away at age 73 on February 3rd in Huntsville, Alabama following a cascade of complications provoked by a Covid infection.
She was born Myra Christine Shire on July 13, 1948 in Montebello, California. After graduating from high school, she joined the Air Force where she worked as a dental assistant and played trumpet as the first woman in the Strategic Air Command Bands. Having received her GI Bill, she earned a BS. and an M.P.A., and had a notable career as an elementary school teacher. She is survived by her husband, Dean; two children, Mari and Jonathan; and two grandchildren, Cameron and Eliza.
One of the most important facets of her life was her singing. Having arrived for a prestigious audition at the Sydney Opera House in her twenties, she heard a voice remind her that she was happiest when singing at church. She came to Christ a few years later. She and Dean met in a church choir, and leading others in worship has been an integral part of her calling. Her gorgeous soprano voice will be cherished, remembered, and missed by many. She now joins the heavenly worship service she has prepared for over several decades.
A funeral service in Madison, Alabama, is scheduled for 2:30 pm on February 7th, 2022. A memorial event will take place in California later this year. In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of Myra’s beloved causes, Jews for Jesus.
