Mike Smith passed away on Tuesday, November 16th at his home surrounded by family. At 58 years old, he lost his battle with frontotemporal dementia.
Mike, the youngest of four children, was born March 11, 1963 in Huntsville, Alabama to Philip & Mary Jewel Smith. Mike was a lifelong resident of Madison, Alabama. As a graduate of Bob Jones High School, he began his career with the Madison Fire Department. Referred to by his friends as “Smitty”, he served the citizens of Madison as a Driver/Engineer with Madison Fire & Rescue for thirty years. For the last fifteen years, he served on the truck purchasing committee, retiring in 2014.
Mike married Lora Johnson Smith in 1987 at Madison Church of Christ where he continued to worship until his death. The couple have two sons, Bryant & Grant. Mike and Lora owned and operated two successful businesses, Smitty’s Lawn Care and Christmas Decor.
Mike was a true outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish. As an avid duck hunter, Mike placed 2nd in the World’s Duck Calling Championship on numerous occasions. Many trips were enjoyed to Arkansas with his sons and friends.
Mike is preceded in death by his father, Philip Mark Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Lora Smith; sons, Bryant Smith (Shelby) & Grant Smith (Kaitlyn); brother, Mark Smith (Karen); sisters, Suzi White & Vicki Workman (Melvin); mother, Jewel; granddaughters, Eleanor & Kennedy and several nieces & nephews.
