Barbara was born July 16, 1933 in Effingham, S.C. as the only child of
Bruce Marvin Langston and Johnnie Elizabeth Mixon. At 87, she finally
entered her eternal home in peace after a tough year and half of illnesses.
After graduation from Columbia High School in 1950, she entered Nursing school and graduated with an R.N. degree in 1953. She married
her High school sweetheart Jan 28, 1955 after he returned home from
the Korean Conflict serving in the 1st Marine Division.
They were married for 61 years before his passing in Feb 2016. They moved to Alabama after living over 40 years in south Florida.
Barbara enjoyed a nursing career, was involved in starting M.A.D.D. in Florida, active in Special Olympics, a school volunteer, and loved all church activities, especially missions and HAP( Huntsville Assistance Program), enthusiastic greeter at Honey Baked Ham, one of the older
volunteers in the days of the Big Spring Jam, and a huge fan of The
University of Alabama! Barbara lived life to the fullest, usually dressed in pink or purple, her signature colors :)
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Paul A Smith.
She is survived by her four children: Terry(Joel)Lonergan, Al(Debbie)Smith, Scott Smith, and Brooks Smith;
A proud Grammy of 7 Grandchildren: Kristen(Dale)Jobes, Britney(Lee) Deutschendorf, Colvin(Cassie) Lonergan, Briana Smith, Kyle Smith, Matthew Hill, Taylor Hill; and 8 Great- grandchildren!
There will be a private family Celebration of Life at a later date, where Barbara & Paul will be taken to the Alabama National Cemetery.
Legacy Chapel in Madison is assisting family with arrangements.
