Herminia (Nina) Delores Santos Rios Laney of Madison, Alabama passed away peacefully December 15, 2020 due to an extended illness. Nina was born on April 8, 1935, in Hagaña, Guam. Nina is preceded in death by her parents, Vincente and Tomasa Santos Rios; brothers, Tony and Alfred Rios; sisters, Agnes Rios Story, Beatrice Rios Schroeder and Mary Rios Givens. She is survived by her loving husband, David Phillip Laney; sisters, Rose Rios Ravenstein and Frances Rios Barczak; her three sons, David Phillip Jr. (Gina), Bryan Kent (Leigh), Patrick Sean (Crysti); and eight grandchildren, Trent, Brendan, Keighly, Lauren, Maris, Jacob, Skyler, and Mason Laney; along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Nina grew up on Guam during WWII and afterwards, moved to San Francisco, California where she was employed as a singer while putting herself through school. She met her husband, David, a naval aviator, and married December 8, 1962 in a formal ceremony at Naval Air Station, Alameda, California. She continued to travel all over the world with her husband and family until she settled in her husband’s hometown of Anniston, Alabama, where she and David raised their sons. Nina was a very talented pianist and vocalist and shared her love of music with her entire family. She was incredibly devoted to her grandchildren whom she showered with constant love and affection through her final days.
Visitation will be held at 11AM CST with a Funeral Mass at 12 noon on December 29th, 2020 at Most Merciful Jesus Catholic Church in Madison, AL. COVID-19 precautions will be observed with respect to social distancing and the wearing of masks. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society.
Nina’s cremains will be interred at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama at a later date.
