Dennis Eldridge Stewart

Dennis Eldridge Stewart, 72, of Huntsville, Alabama, formerly of Bessemer, Alabama, passed away on October 24, 2020 after a long illness.  Dennis was born in Bessemer, Alabama on February 2, 1948.  He was preceded in death by his parents Rosie and Ross Stewart and sister Regina Williford.  He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Bonnie Poole Stewart, children: Shannon Vandiver (Cameron) of Madison, Alabama; Slade Stewart (Wendy) of Harvest, Alabama; and Shea Graham of Woodbridge, Virginia; sisters:  Shirley Howard (Johnny), Debra Pauly (Wade) and Rhonda Woods (Rony) of Bessemer, Alabama; grandchildren: Kaylee Stewart and Parker Graham and several nieces and nephews.

Dennis joined the United States Army at the age of 19 where he served as a Military Police Officer for 28 years and retired as a Non-Commissioned Officer First Sergeant.  He was proud to serve in the 101^st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and honored to be a Vietnam and Dessert Storm Veteran.  He was the recipient of various awards including the Bronze Star for heroic service in a war zone and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for heroic conduct while fighting the enemy.  Dennis enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, playing/watching sports, playing cards and singing.  He didn’t meet a stranger and had nicknames for all members of his family – especially his children and grandchildren.

Please visit with the family for a celebration of life on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home from 1:00 – 2:00 pm.  Funeral service will commence at 2:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Mike Green.  Burial to follow at Memory Gardens located at 6810 University Drive North West, Huntsville, AL 35806.

Memorial contributions may be made in Dennis’ memory to the American Cancer Society or to Huntsville’s Clearview Cancer Institute.
