Helen Louise Hunter, loving mother and resident of Madison, AL passed away at age 83 on Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Falkville Healthcare Center. She was born April 9, 1936 in Washington, D.C., the youngest of 3 children born to Dr. Bodie and Bernice Shelhorse. She graduated from Richard Montgomery H.S. in Rockville, MD, studied at University of MD, Pasadena City College, MCC, and Salem State earning degrees in Mental Health and Psychology. Helen was all about family, but she also served her community as Chairman for the Heart Fund, Cub Scout Den Mother, Campfire Leader, tutor, and Veterans Administration worker. Helen reported on the NASA Apollo program for the Reading Chronicle and worked as a real estate agent, a clerk at Star Market, and, most recently, a nursery care worker at Trinity Baptist Church.
Helen is survived by her brother, Lee Shelhorse of Rockville, MD and her sister, Alice Shelhorse of Winchester, MA, as well as her five children: son Erwin Hunter (Dawn) of Owens Cross Roads, their children Jessica, Jennifer, Chris Brady, Cheyenne Brady, Alex, and Gabby; son David Hunter (Pam) of Milford, MA, their children Sarah and Elizabeth; daughter Shirley Black (Eddie) of Madison, their children Catherine Waselkov (Peter), Emily Sexton (Chris), their grandson Leo, and Eric; daughter Patricia Sams (Ronnie) of Madison, their children Jessica Yarbrough (Cain), their grandsons Henry and Emmett, Garrick Sams (Morgan), Daniel Copeland, Matthew Copeland, and Amelia Panazze (Spencer); daughter Linda Markiewicz (Chet), of Spring Hill, FL with children Nastasia, Chris (Thalia), their grandson Lucas, and Cassandra; by her first husband, Dr. Herb Hunter (married 1956). She leaves behind a total of 56 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as numerous other relatives. She was preceded in death in 2013 by her second husband, Neil Jauken of Madison.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
