Grace Georgianna Cox, 93 of Ardmore, Alabama, passed on October 29 2019, after a brief illness. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was generous and kind to her family, friends, and neighbors, and could always be counted upon to lend a helping hand.
Grace was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 28th 1926 to Herman and Anna DeFries, She was the youngest of three children. Grace married Walter F. Cox in Brooklyn, New York on February 19th 1949. A full time homemaker, Grace raised three children Richard, Carol, and Joyce.
Always active, Grace was an avid walker and bicyclist. She loved animals, and visiting New York City’s various attractions. She was also an expert seamstress and devoted crocheter. Her beautiful creations will be treasured by generations to come.
After 34 years of marriage Walter passed away in 1983, and Grace moved to North Carolina to live with her daughter Joyce and son-in-law Al. In the years that followed Grace traveled extensively with them as Al pursued a successful career in the US Army.
Joyce and Al have two daughters, Allaina and Kristy-Leigh. The girls and their respective sons Evan and Dillon were the lights of Grace’s life and she was their north star. They in turn belovedly referred to her simply as Gigi.
Grace was preceded in death by her beloved husband Walter, her parents Herman and Anna, brother Herman DeFries, sister Martha Meyers, and son-in-law Douglas Coppola.
She is survived by daughter Joyce Nielsen, son-in-law Albert Nielsen, daughter Carol Coppola, son Richard Cox, daughter-in-law Janet Cox, grand daughters Allaina Lawrence and Kristy-Leigh Scherr and their husbands Matthew Lawrence and Cody Scherr, and great grandsons Evan Lawrence, and Dillon Scherr. She also leaves behind beloved members of the Paul, Meyers, Neeser, and Heilmann families.
