David Frantz Carl

June 9, 1942 — October 18, 2018

David “Dave” Frantz Carl, age 76, passed away October 18, 2018.  He was born in 1942 in Cumberland, MD. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He started his career as a Hydraulics Engineer with Allis Chalmers (later Fiat Allis) in Springfield, IL and retired at Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE) in Huntsville, AL.  At TBE, he was awarded Employee of the Year in 1993 and became an Engineering Fellow in 2017. When he was awarded the Engineering Fellow, TBE stated, “Dave had become the person to go to when everything else fails, an ‘engineer’s engineer’ with a true understanding of how things can and cannot work.  He was a significant contributor to Teledyne Brown’s success.” His expertise as a hydraulic engineer led to him being the primary subject matter expert at TBE and he holds four patents for hydraulic control systems.

During retirement he went back to TBE as a part-time contractor.  He also loved to volunteer his time setting up Galaxy of Lights at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens and was a past-president of the Rocket City Miata Club.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen Carl; his son, Daniel (Esther) Carl; daughter, Debbie (Travis) Wells; and grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Frantz and Margaret Carl.

A visitation will be held at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home & Crematory on October 22, from 6-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Huntsville Botanical Garden.
