Evangeline Layne Landress was born on June 22, 1927 in Hendersonville, NC to John L. Layne and Maggie Eulala Botts Layne. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Lander College, in Greenwood, SC (with a full scholarship), where she graduated Cum Laude, with degrees in History and Social Services.
She then attended The Salvation Army Training School in Atlanta, GA and after graduation was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1949. She served as the Assistant Corps Officer in Lakeland, FL, then as the Corps Officer of the Miami Edison Corps in Miami, FL. While serving as the Corps Officer of the Miami Edison Corps she met Cliff Landress and they were married in 1955. They served together as Corps Officers in Daytona Beach, FL, Waycross, GA, and Athens, GA before appointments to Divisional Headquarters in Baltimore, MD, Jacksonville, FL and Atlanta, GA. Their final appointment was to Territorial Headquarters in Atlanta, GA .
Evangeline and Cliff then served as employees of The Salvation Army in Miami, FL (for eight years) and then Houston, TX (for fifteen years) and were faithful soldiers during this time at the Miami Citadel and Houston Temple Corps.
Evangeline was respected for her expertise in working with the homeless throughout her career, winning an award from the Coalition for the Homeless in Houston, TX in 1997, and being named "Friend of the Homeless" in Houston/Harris County, TX. Evangeline and Cliff had an honored retirement from service with The Salvation Army in March, 1997. She and Cliff retired to the beautiful Smoky Mountain community of Lake Junaluska, NC, where they served as soldiers of the Waynesville, NC Corps for sixteen years. Due to declining health and in order to be closer to her family, Evangeline and Cliff moved to Huntsville, AL in 2013.
Evangeline and Cliff have three daughters: Angela Karen Persefield (Jerry) of Rosharon, TX, Joyce Colleen Bergen (Gary) of Huntsville, AL, and Anita Carole Projahn (Scott) of Oviedo, FL.
She has six grandchildren: Aaron Keith Bergen (Taylor), Cliff Raymond Bergen, Megan Ashley Villarreal (Christopher), Bethany Ro Projahn, Matthew Scott Projahn, and Christopher Raymond Projahn.
She also has three great grandchildren: Natalie Brooke Bergen, Hadley Erin Bergen and Adalyn Elissa Villarreal.
Evangeline was "Promoted to Glory" at 11:20 AM on September 30, 2018.
Interment will be at the Faith Memorial Park, Madison, AL.
