Freeman LeRoy Auten, 87, of Madison, Alabama, passed away Friday, September 14, 2018 at Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville, Alabama. He was born on May 16, 1931 in Milton, Pennsylvania to the late Charles and Dorothy Pannabaker Auten. He served in the U.S. Army 1949-1952, stationed in Germany 1952. He returned to Sylacauga, Alabama where he first met his sweetheart Ruth Whaley before he left for Germany. They married in 1952, started a family and moved to Huntsville in 1960. He worked at Brown Engineering (Teledyne), then GM Saginaw Steering in Decatur where he retired in 1994, living in Madison. He was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church, Huntsville.
Freeman is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Ruth Whaley Auten; daughters Becky Ruhlman (Larry) of Madison, Mary Auten of Huntsville, Bonnie Auten of Madison; grandchildren Christine Ruhlman Yeske, David Ruhlman, Lauren Cullen-Evallen; two great-grandsons; brother Robert Schaeffer, Watsontown, PA.
Freeman loved being with family, had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed time with so many dear friends. They will all miss hearing stories of his lifetime.
